Chapter 21
âHave you been hiking with Mallory?â Excellent, Maggs. You just told yourself not to touch on anything personal.
âNot yet, and before you ask, I havenât spoken to my father either. Joe and the others are constantly calling or appearing on my doorstep to see if Iâm all right, and then probing gently into whatâs up with my family.â
âItâs only because he cares⦠they all do. Youâre one of theirs and upset because your family are in town. Itâs natural they worry. Their way of showing that worry is by constantly checking youâre ok.â
âI know,â Fin sighed. âItâs like being smothered by one of Jackâs knee rugs.â
âBut we wonât discuss it if you donât want to. It, being your family.â
He shot her a look. âI got that, and thatâs very accommodating of you.â
She shrugged as they took the right fork that led to his cabin. âI donât want you asking me personal stuff, so I wonât ask you any.â
âThanks. And sorry, by the way.â
âFor?â
âI was rude to you the night I saw my father at the lodge.â
âThere seems to be a pattern forming there.â
He snorted but didnât add anything. They reached his cabin. Long and low with a gabled roof, it was bigger up close than sheâd realized.
âIâve never been in here.â
âWhat, never?â He unlaced his boots inside the back door, and Maggs did the same, then shrugged out of her jacket. Pulling out the wallet, she handed it to him to see if he might recognize it.
âI found this on the trail, and no, Iâve never been in your cabin. I had no reason to come inside.â
âVisiting a friend?â Fin took the wallet and opened it.
âOkay, sure, but you never invited me,â she said as he pulled out the note and opened it.
âWell, Iâm inviting you now,â he said, reading the words.
âI met the Robbins sisters and Mr. Goldhirsh on the trail, and they read the note. Itâs really lovely, isnât it, Fin, and sad. But Iâm not sure we should be looking at it.â
âYou have absolutely no context as to who wrote this note and why, and yet itâs made you go mushy,â Fin accused her.
âItâs about loving someone so much youâre willing to risk all to take a chance on that love,â Maggs said, reading the note again.
âYou got all that from those words?â
âThe Robbins sisters did too.â She felt the need to defend herself.
âWomen,â he muttered. âGetting all gooey over a few words.â
âSo youâre not a romantic then?â
âIâm a realist. Some note that could have been written years ago is not romantic, especially when the contents suggests that whoever wrote it was willing to break two relationships to achieve their goals.â
âBut what if the relationships were unhappy ones?â
âYouâre serious?â Fin shook his head. âYouâre actually debating with me about a note when you have no clue who wrote it or why? This A.J. sounds like he wasnât convinced anyway.â
âYou canât know that. Maybe he needed some time, and this note would have arrived and he could see that she really loved him.
